Wisconsin Season Of Pride Down To “Final Four
Pride 2008Eau Claire, LaCrosse, Milwaukee, Superior - For LGBT folks in the Badger State who really want to show their pride, Wisconsin’s summer-long calendar filled with gay festivals certainly appears to have become a test of endurance. From June’s water-logged Milwaukee PrideFest, through July’s community-inclusive Green Bay Pride Alive or “back to basics” Madison mix of politics and picnic, to early August’s country fair-style Central Wisconsin Pride, pride has come in as many colors as the rainbow flag. And like any good tournament, the LGBT community has finally reached the “Final Four” with Eau Claire’s Unity Picnic August 16, Milwaukee Black Pride (CDP) August 22-24, LaCrosse’s marathon “Live, Love, Be Proud Of Your Colors” event August 23, and the season-ending big party up north at Duluth-Superior’s Twin Ports Pride August 28-31.
Eau Claire Unity Picnic
Eau Claire’s Unity Picnic from 11 AM to 6 PM at the pavilion in the city’s Mount Simon Park (Addison St.) on Saturday, August 16, is a joint venture by the city’s two gay bars, Diversions and Scooters. Admission is free.
“We’re buying the food, buying the beer and everyone’s welcome to come out and join us,” Scooters owner Jody Kvapil told Quest. “We’re keeping it very simple. We’re not even charging anything. Any group that wants to set up a booth, just show up early and bring your own table!”
Kvapil said the only scheduled activity planned during the picnic is open mic karaoke. Both bars also have special events planned during the weekend. “On Friday night (August 15) Scooters is having strippers and Diversions is doing an underwear party,” he said. “ After the picnic on Saturday we’re having a drag show and they’re having an amateur strip contest.”

Twin Ports Pride August 28-31
It’s been heralded by Out magazine as one of the nation’s best small town pride celebrations. It’s also older that the state’s best-known pride weekend, Nemesis RisingMartha Washthe Milwaukee PrideFest and has drawn gay folks from as far away as Winnipeg, Canada.  It also serves to close Wisconsin’s summer-long season of pride. And this year, the 22nd annual Duluth-Superior Twin Ports Pride will offer two top-name headliners and an expanded “Fruit Float” as part of its four days of LGBT-themed fun August 28-31.
“We expect to have the biggest turnout ever this year,” Twin Ports Pride co-chair David Vipond told Quest. “All indications are that we should easily surpass last year’s 10,000 in attendance.”
Vipond noted that despite the large number of participants, Twin Ports Pride remains a home town event. “Twin Ports Pride is a major pride event that still has that grass roots feel,” he said.
The musical duo Nemesis Rising and “Queen of Clubland” Martha Wash will close the centerpiece festival at the heart of the pride weekend Saturday, August 30 at with shows at 5 and 6 PM respectively.
Nemesis Rising are photogenic Montana-bred gay identical twins Jacob & Joshua who, in addition to churning out popular club cuts such as “Number One In Heaven” and “Rise Up,” also are the stars of their own LOGO cable network reality show “Nemesis Rising.” In addition to fronting a string of pop hits such as the Weather Girls’ “It’s Raining Men,” Black Box’s “Ride On Time,” “Everybody, Everybody” & “Strike It Up,” and C & C Music Company’s “Everybody Dance Now,” Martha Wash has topped the Billboard Dance Music charts with her own “Carry On,” “You Lift Me Up” and 2007’s “Keep Your Body Workin’” with DJ Tony Moran.
The Nemesis Rising and Martha Wash shows  will cap a day-long schedule of events at Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth that will include a keynote address by activist Justin Hager and a mix of entertainment that will span jazz, rock and folk.
As a 22 year old college student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, keynoter Hager is a rising voice in the LGBT community, especially in the Midwest.  Justin was a founding member of the Superior High School Gay-Straight Alliance, the first Youth Representative to the Superior City Council, and Wisconsin State Coordinator for the Soulforce Seven Straight Nights for Equal Rights Campaign.
Throughout the day festival attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy Duluth’s improvisational Cello Dreams & The Cosmic Pit Orchestra,  Minneapolis folk duo The Bitter Spills, the freestyle country outfit Songs In D, Twin Cities’ lesbian rapper Alicia Leafgreen as WLR, the “queercore” punk band Tough Tough Skin, Duluth rockers The Super Tacks and roots music group Crew Jones, and Minneapolis pop-folk recording artists The very People.

There is no admission charge for the festival, but all are encouraged to purchase the Twin Ports Pride buttons to help underwrite the cost of the weekend. Last year’s co-chair Harvey Plasch also held a “Bar-B-Queer” event earlier this summer that raised over $8000 to help pay festival costs.
The weekend officially kicks off with a formal mayoral celebration Thursday, August 28, at The Depot in Duluth. The free event runs from 5-8 PM and will feature Duluth Mayor Don Ness’ pride proclamation. The reception also will feature music by Taconite (beginning at 6:30), hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar.
Following will be three days of events that include a patio party, a bonfire, an expansion of the “Fruit Float” cruise, a 5K run, a worship service and a parade in addition to Saturday’s festival.
In addition to a patio party at the Flame in Superior and a Jazz Night at the Radisson in Duluth, Friday evening will be the traditional all-night bonfire on Wisconsin Point beginning at 7 PM and lasting until dawn. Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket, a warm jacket and mosquito repellent, two necessities for the typically cool and insect-filled late summer evenings in the north woods.
Saturday will begin with the 5K Fun Run, Walk and Roll at Western Waterfront Park in Duluth. The beautiful Western Waterfront Trail runs along the St. Louis River near the Northern head of the Munger Trail. The event, which has a $10 per person fee (children under 11 are free), begins with registration at 8 AM, steps off at 9 and is expected to last most of the morning. Organizers expect this year’s run to exceed the 200 participants who made the 2007 run the largest to date.
The annual Block Party at JT’s Bar & Grill in Superior returns for its third year on Saturday evening. The outdoor dance and party will cover over 1,000 square feet and run from 9 PM until bar closing. The parade, which rivals Milwaukee’s in terms of both entries and attendance, will wend its way down to the Main Club and feature music, floats filled with bare-chested young men and drag queens, leather-clad women on motorcycles, and marching units of families, friends and other allies.
Following the parade will be the traditional annual Fruit Float, this year featuring three boats: Vista Cruise Lines’ Vista Star, the Vista King and the Vista Queen. This year organizers have  added a youth boat for ages 14 to 20. Tickets for the youth boat are only $10. Gay Miller Exec’s Killer Gets Life In Prison
Milwaukee - Calling the crime a “terroristic act,” Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Jeffrey Wagner on July 23 sentenced 21 year old Latin Kings gang Vic Milford (L) and partner Chrismember Miguel “Wicked” Ayala to life in prison without the chance of parole in the brutal January 26 death of Lodewikus “Vic” Milford.  The South African-born gay man was shot as an after thought by Ayala following a robbery of Milford and two Miller Brewing Company coworkers following an night of clubbing in the city’s Walker’s Point entertainment district.
Wagner also tacked on an additional 50 years in prison for  the robberies Ayala had committed. He had been found guilty of Milford’s death in June.
“I don’t see anything in his background but destruction, havoc and death,” Wagner said before handing down his sentence.
Also sentenced was one of Ayala’s cohort in the crimes. 17 year old Carlos Gonzales, who had earlier pled guilty and testified against Ayala, was sentenced to 21 years in prison plus an additional 9 years of parole. 17 year old Irene Rodriguez, who drove the getaway car and also testified against Ayala, had earlier pleaded guilty in children’s court to felony murder and was sentenced to a juvenile corrections program.

Frivolous Action Wisconsin Lawsuit Finally Over
Madison - On August 1 the Wisconsin Supreme Court, in an unsigned unanimous decision, said it would not revisit a case in which an attorney was ordered to court costs now estimated to be over $180,000 for bringing a frivolous lawsuit against Action Wisconsin, the gay civil rights group now known as Fair Wisconsin. The court rejected Milwaukee attorney James Donohoo’s argument that Justice Louis Butler should not have participated in the June ruling because he accepted campaign donations from Fair Wisconsin board members, neither of whom served on the board at the time the lawsuit was filed.
The Supreme Court said in its ruling that the law did not require Butler to step aside in the 4-3 opinion. Butler ruled in the majority against Donohoo and did not participate in the latest ruling.
Donohoo represented New Orleans preacher and gay rights opponent Grant E. Storms in the case against Action Wisconsin.

Obama also supports expanding the federal employment non-discrimination laws and federal hate crime laws to protect lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender people while McCain does not, she said in the press release.

Arts & Entertainment:
Moliere’s “Misanthrope” Opens Boulevard Theatre’s 23rd Season
Milwaukee - Bay View’s spunky Boulevard Theatre tosses the opening pitch of Milwaukee’s cornucopia of theatre offerings by staging a French classical comedy in early August, 2008.
A radically chic “re-do” of French classical playwright Moliere’s artful comedy of manners “The Misanthrope” fires forth as the opening salvo of its powerhouse 23rd season. Running a brief two weeks only from August 12-24 at the Boulevard Theatre, this updating of Moliere’s uproarious comedy will prove to be Milwaukee’s first “hot ticket.”
Artistic Director Mark Bucher resets Moliere’s sly satire of sexual hypocrisy and social maneuvering from a 17th century French chateau to a modern-day art gallery in Quebec, Ontario (or “Queerbec,” if you like). And Bucher puts the “gay” back into “gay comedy” by changing some previously straight relationships to same-sex couplings. Both the characters and the audience will need comic scorecards to keep track of both the “straight” and the “not so narrow.” This sassy, saucy concept expands the vision of the story, heightens the relevance of Moliere’s social themes, and increases audiences’ awareness of gay/lesbian romance. And the Boulevard production will feature actual art on loan from prominent local Milwaukee artists and galleries.
Noted local Milwaukee actor David Flores bests his previous theatrical trifecta by bringing Moliere’s cranky curmudgeon “Alceste” (the “misanthrope” of the title) to life. Flores has won accolades for his previous leading man portrayals in past Boulevard productions of Moliere comedies (“The School For Wives,” “Tartuffe” and “The Bungler).
Seems the cranky Alceste abhors the double-dealings of society and only pines for truth, art and, oh yes, a “sweet young thing” named “Celimene,” who is more than a few years his junior.
The object of his May-December affection is hot-blooded heartthrob Cesar Gamino, who portrays the cocky coquette “Celimene,” a role usually covered by an actress. Gamino, who is investigating becoming a personal trainer, made some theatrical patrons “sit up and notice” with his semi-nude scampering in Boulevard’s previous shows (“The Internationalist,” “Eureka!”) and is no stranger to charming the pants off people.
And Flores is reunited with talented actress Beth Monhollen as his sidekick and sage counselor “Philinte,” who is usually played by a man. Monhollen and Flores created theatrical thunder appearing as “Portia” and “Shylock” several seasons back in Boulevard’s fast-paced staging of Shakespeare’s “The Merchant Of Venice.”
Other notable talents on this classical “lazy susan” of sexual orientation include: Marion Araujo, Juan Blasquez, Joe Fransee, Mark Hagen, Rachel Lewandowski, Kirsten Mulvey and Jason Will.
All performances of the “The Misanthrope” are at the Ensemble’s theatre space, 2252 South Kinnickinnic, in the heart of Milwaukee’s Bay View district.
Single tickets for “The Misanthrope” are $20. Season subscription packages, available through October 30, lower ticket prices to $15 per show. Curtain times are 7:30 PM weekdays, 8 PM Friday and Saturday and 2:30 PM on Sunday. there also will be a 4 PM matinee on Saturday, August 23.
Call the Boulevard’s 24-hour ticket line at 414-744-5757 to book single tickets or inquire about the Boulevard’s  subscription packages. Boulevard also welcomes group sales, corporate bookings and fund-raising group “nights.”
More information on this production and upcoming shows are available on our website at: www.boulevardtheatre.com.

“Gypsy” Struts Her Stuff At Off the Wall
Milwaukee - Off the Wall Theatre begins its ninth season with what many consider to be the greatest musical of all time, “Gypsy.” Revived on Broadway four different times, this musical fable about the young Gypsy Rose Lee and her controlling, stage struck mother, Rose, contains all the elements of the perfect musical. It has a powerful show-biz score by Jule Styne, clever insightful lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a dramatic masterpiece of a book by Arthur Laurents. In the character of Mama Rose, “Gypsy” has the “King Lear” of roles for female actresses.
In Off the Wall Theatre’s intimate production, the emphasis will be on the character relationships and the depth of the script and songs. Each section of the story is like a one act play in itself. Attendees will see Rose’s daughters as little girls, teenagers, and adults. They will also witness the various incarnations of their vaudeville act: “Baby June and her Newsboys,” and “Dainty June and her Farmboys.”
“This musical has everything,” Director Dale Gutzman told Quest. “Famous songs, tap dancing, children, burlesque humor, and those three famous strippers and their show stopper, ‘Got to Have a Gimmick!’”
“The struggles of Mama Rose are legendary,” Gutzman said. “There are few theatrical moments as riveting as when she unleashes her manic drive at the end of the first act in the song, ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses!’ And her musical breakdown at the end of the second, tops even that!”
“Did I mention that the show even has a dancing cow?” Gutzman added. “Gypsy” has a score that includes the hit songs, “Together Wherever We Go,” “Some People,” “You’ll Never Get Away From Me,” and “All I Need Now is the Girl.”
Director Dale Gutzman and Musical Director Anne Van Dusen are working with an extremely talented cast. Sharon Rise, who was featured in “Chess,”and choreographed portions of “The Frogs,” will play Mama Rose. Milwaukee starlet Alison Mary Forbes will play Louise, who becomes Gypsy Rose Lee, the world famous stripper. Liz Mistele, Off The Wall’s sparkling young talent from “Hamlet” and “Death on the Nile,” will play Dainty June, the character based on Louise’s sister, June Havoc. Robert Hirschi who played Shakespeare in “The Frogs” essays the role of Herbie, Rose’s long suffering love. The three “world weary” strippers will be played by Annie Mater, Kristin Pagenkopf, and Nancy Visintainer Armstrong. Young Tyson Monroe plays Tulsa, the dancer with the dream of stardom. Also in the cast are, Kurtis Witzelsteiner, Lawrence Lukasavage, Michael Davis, Tom Welcenbach, and “a whole gaggle of talented young performers,” according to Gutzman.
Technical Director David Roper will perform another miracle in the tiny
Off the Wall Space, filling it with stage lights and a Burlesque Runway.
Like “The Frogs,” “Gypsy” is expected to sell out before it even opens, Gutzman predicted. “Don’t delay but order your tickets now,” he said. “We are running the show three weekends to accommodate the demand for seats.
“Gypsy will run at the Off The Wall Theatre from September 25 - October 11. Tickets are $22-26. For reservations call 414-327-3552 or visit the theater’s website at: www.offthewalltheatre.com.

Milwaukee Premiere of “Well” Kicks Of Chamber Theater’s 34th Season

Milwaukee - The Milwaukee Chamber Theatre kicks-off its 34th season with the Milwaukee premiere of “Well” by Lisa Kron, August 7-24. A hilarious and unconventional play, “well” focuses on the anecdotes of performance artist Lisa and her overbearing mother, who failed to diagnose her own physical ailments yet succeeded in curing a community-wide plague of segregation and intolerance.
“Well” is directed by Laura Gordon and features Angela Iannone, Ruth Schudson, Marti Gobel, Bo Johnson, Travis A. Knight and Tami Workentin.
Milwaukee favorite Angela Iannone plays Lisa, a hip and highly-respected performance artist, who normally appears solo. However, for this project, she is going out on a limb and has hired a diverse ensemble of actors for a “multi-character theatrical exploration” which Lisa swears is not autobiographical, though based on real events.
Throwing the event into chaos is Lisa’s ailing mother, played by MCT Co-founder Ruth Schudson, who is there to “watch” the performance - and make sure her daughter tells the story correctly. Theatrical conventions are thrown out the window as Lisa’s mother interrupts the flow of the performance and injects personal anecdotes, derailing the production and throwing the cast into a whirlwind of human experience, exposing the roots of disease and the power of healing.
Performances will be at the Broadway Theatre Centers Cabot Theatre, 158 N. Broadway. Tickets may be reserved by phone at: 414-291-7800 or online at: www.chamber-theatre.com.

Ear Candy: New CDs From DJ Max Rodriguez, Danny Tenaglia & Sick Of Sarah
Reviewed by Mike Fitzpatrick
Here’s the scoop on three summer releases perfect for beach boomboxes, iPod boppin’ or main street cruisin’ (assuming you can still afford the gas).
Pride 08 - DJ Max Rodriguez (Centaur Music) The “sound alike” music phenomenon has been around for decades, dating back to Your Hit Parade Pride O* CDand 50’s budget label compilations then brought to new life with Seventies and Eighties disco remakes of every pop, country and even classical tune known to man. For the last 10 years Centaur Music has perfected the formula of mixing several doppelgänger ditties with a few genuine club hits into seamless hour-long mixes perfect for personal partying. New York DJ Max Rodriguez’s Gay Pride series has been a label standout. Pride 08 continues the tradition. Eurodisco remakes of the Bellamy Brothers’ “Let Your Love Flow” and Denice Williams’ “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” show up with “live or Memorex” versions of recent chart-toppers such as Madonna and Justin Timberlake’s “4 Minutes” and Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love.” In fact, Kaith Haarmeyer’s Pride & Disco Mix picks off the club smash Moto Blanco Mix of “Bleeding Love” so closely that only a copyright infringement lawyer might be able to tell the difference. Overall it’s a tasty fast-food quality musical package worth an online order from Amazon.com or download from iTunes.
Futurism - Danny Tenaglia (Silver Label/Tommy Boy) Top 40 dance droids and drag queens looking for lip-sync numbers beware! This 2-CD Futurism CDtrance dance set is not for you! Back in the 70’s when Tommy Boy Records owner Tom Silverman wrote and edited a little club deejay newsletter called Disco News (later DMR) he would give equal space to progressive eurodisco as well as the chart-driven hip-hop and disco that mainstream America grew to love and then later hate. In its original incarnation eurodisco was a multi-layered, mostly instrumental music form that since has evolved in the trance, tribal and deep house music of today. Apparently record mogul Silverman still harbors a soft spot for the progressive. Veteran progressive house deejay Danny Tenaglia’s first compilation in six years may be called “Futurism” but it harks back to those early days of eurodisco in its spirit. Electronica drives first of the two CDs in this package, while the beat dominates on the second. This is music meant to be experienced directly through headphones or ear buds, with eyes closed and not necessarily with the feet involved. Call me oxymoronic, but this is meditative dance music. Recommended for those willing to take the trip - with no chemical enhancement needed.
Sick Of Sarah CDSick Of Sarah (Adamant Records) The eponymous debut of the distaff Minneapolis rock quintet Sick of Sarah offers up ten self-penned, radio-ready tunes that owe a lot to the Go Go’s and the Bangles, though less guitar-driven, and with up front vocals reminiscent of a more mainstream, all-girl B-52’s. The album’s standout lead off song “Daisies” is a pop ditty that sounds like it might have been stolen off of Mika’s recent “Life In Cartoon Motion.” “Not Listening” and “Hardest Part” nod to Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, cited as a band influence, while “Bittersweet” and “Breakdown”echo John Fogerty, another band idol. The album’s eco-friendly gatefold packaging offers photos of the band but no lyrics or other production notes which is unfortunate because this is a group whose songs you’ll want to learn the words to. Pick this one up, for I promise that you won’t get sick of Sarah very soon!
